Interest-based Ads Preference & Third Party Ads Preference

(written by adeel)

After noticing that adsense ads stalk you I decided to turn off these feature yesterday. For example a couple of days ago I went to hostgator site and since then the only ad i see everywhere is hostgator.

It has been only a day and I see my income jumped to about 40% more. The ctr is slightly up. I usually get 75 clicks per day but today i got 100. Surprisingly CPC is also about 20% more when It’s supposed to be low due to less competition?

I’ll keep you guys updated on this thread.

What do you guys think?

I did the same thing about 6 Month ago after seeing a lot of toy Ads on my medical site after searching for a present for my niece.

I think Ads should be about the topic of the website and not about something the visitor was searching for before coming to my website.

However this step should only be taken if your site is in a high paying niche.

If you get a few cents per click on Ads about your topic, then interest based Ads might be exactly what you want to have as well on your site.

Actually my niche considered a very cheap niche(south asian politics) but I still got paid about 50 cents a click. I will run this test for a week and see how it goes.

50 cents per click is not cheap ;)

That's what I'm saying. I was getting paid about 34 cents a click and since I turned it off, the price jumped to around 49 cents.

There was a big discussion about interest based advertising on webmasterworld.

    Quote from the AdSense Help:
You can opt out of showing ads that are based on user interest and demographic categories (for example, 'sports enthusiasts' or 'inferred age:18-34'). In turn, Google will not use visitation information from your sites to help create interest and demographic categories. However, you cannot opt out of showing ads to users based on their previous interactions with the advertiser, such as visits to an advertiser's website.

This means if you opt-out of interest based Ads then a visit on your site will be not be tracked for user behavioral studies. However if a user visited a website from someone who is advertising with AdWords this user will still see interest based ads from the AdWords advertiser.

So you can't really opt-out of interest based ads.

After reading this a few days ago I decided to opt-in again and see what effect this has. I did so many changes the last two weeks that I can't really tell if it had a positive effect or not.

However it did not had a negative effect for me which I first thought it would have.
