How many AdSense units should be on One page?

I know we are allowed to have three. I heard If you just display one unit, google will show the highest paying ads only? How true is that?

    Like the article admin links says you'll probably have to decide what works best for yourself and your community.

    Personally for guests I show 2 ads and a 3rd one after they've viewed 3 or more threads and haven't registered along with a "please register" message.

    For registered users I only show a single ad in the footer- a trade off to keep people happy though obviously not the best choice for maximizing income.

    I want them to be happy and produce content which brings in more visitors that can be monetized with ADs.
