Place without borders next to content

(written by unicorn)

If you place an adsense add next or “within” content with no boarders, the audience thinks it might be an object that it can “click” to go away.

Example:

CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT
advertisingCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT
advertisingCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT
advertisingCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT
CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT
CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT

performs better than:

CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT

advertising CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT

advertising CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT

advertising CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT

CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT

CONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENTCONTENT

This is of course not good for your user experience.

However if you have special campaigns that need to have their CTR improved or they are dead for the future, you might think of this.

Boarders should only be used for blending when it is absolutely necessary.

However too much blending can hurt you as well.

I talked about this here: Is too much blending bad for business?

I wanted to say "padding" instead of boarders. I never use boarders.

However if there is no space between the ad and the text, so the text directly begins next to the ad (this happens mostly for the image ads), than my advice will pay out with a very high ctr.

You are right, but how many of the clicks will convert for the Advertiser?

Do people really click on the AD because they are interested in it or is it more of "tricking them" to click?

I for myself decided to place ADs in the content but mark them as Advertising so that people click by choice not by accident.

    Demo: (Resource no longer exists)

Not few will convert most likely. Therefore this is a placement not for adsense, but for third party advertisers who most likely only notice the clicks and not the leads.

If the Ad is properly marked as Ad and has enough distance to not be clicked accidentally they convert quite well.

Like in my demo link the Ad is marked with "Anzeige" (which means Ad in German) and enough distance to the surrounding content I think it is a perfect spot for AdSense.
