Google AdSense Ads open in a new window

Hi.

I just noticed that since yesterday Google opens AdSense Ads on my Projects in a new window.

I know that for some countries Google enabled this option (like for Asia) with the reasoning that this is the expected behavior from the user clicking on the Ads.

I don’t know if it is just a test balloon for Germany, for selected publishers or if AdSense changed the behavior of their Ads for all.

I was waiting for this a long time. If Ads open in a new window you don’t lose the User that is clicking the Ad. This means a few thousand users a day that stay on your site and not leave it by an Ad click. 😎

You can see if your AdSense Ads open in a new window if you see this:

Did you notice the same on your site?

What is your opinion on this?

I think it is a good thing if it was generalized. Of course for general, non technical audience it's the best to open in a new window/tab since they can then browse more of the same site and also click on more ads.

Maybe they finally listened to the publishers ;)

How are you guys testing this without getting in trouble?

I don't know what took them so long to implement this. It's common sense opening ads in a new window means more clicks, more revenue for all involved.

I guess they haven't deployed this featured completely. Haven't seen the icon on the ads on my site.

    I plead the 5th.

It seems that installing DFP Small Business as AdServer and setting Ad Units to open in a new window makes AdSense Ads open in a new Window too. This change may take several hours or days so watch out for it.

You can find detailed instructions on how to setup DFP Small Business as your AdServer  in my DFP Small Business Tutorial

It is against the AdSense ToS to open AdSense Ads in a new window, so I strongly advice you to deactivate this behaviour!
