The ranking is not important at all for AdSense besides bringing in more traffic. Also I would not focus on CPC for single clicks, your RPM is what is important.

The CPC depends on a number of factors like the niche, how many advertisers, how pricey are the products that are getting sold via the advertisements, etc...

For example I was running a big hiphop website with 50k members and around 1mio PIs/month which earned me around 100USD per month because Hiphop just isn't an interesting niche for Advertisers.

Or at least not a good niche to monetize with AdSense.

    That's live ;)

I was wondering if it might be that :(.

      Bummer.

Any niche where there is a high competition between advertizers (so has many products to sell, or highly priced products) you'll get a high cpc..

But generally where there is a high competition between advertizers there is also high competition between webmasters.. Not easy to make a medium choice :-)

If this is so then how come I have suddenly found a drop in my CPC and RPM when my readers are double what they used to be?

CPC and RPM doesn't relate to the number of your visitors. Why your CPC went down I don't know.

I will mention the word "Smart Pricing" you'll have to research it, but I'm not worried about it.

Google pays what they want anyway, we think there are some rules, but if I was adsense I'd do what I want with the numbers, so why wouldn't they do it also?

I don't think they are more ethical than me, thinking like this then everybody else plays nice, politicians, corporations, etc. It's not the case..

So google adsence is able to determine the content of your site and display advertisements at costs reflective of your content? wow
