Currently I have site which is a WP site. The niche of site is as such that there are no high cpm. However, now CTR is also very low, its less than 1% which is very disappointing.
However, I was thinking to add your suggestion ie. intro box with adsense ie. as you did for VB here..

I tried intuitive a year back, it was good for while then again back to bad ctr.
Suggest your views.
First of I would drastically reduce the numbers of forums.
Try to have 20 Forums at most until your forum really grows bussy.
Also you are using vBulletin 4.0 for which I released several placement mods which are perfect for vB forums.
Use the Welcome placement (as it was intended not with the thread preview) also use AdSense inside first and last post which perform quite well.
To get a constant CTR of 2% is very good for a forum.
Forums usually don't perform as good as editorial websites when it comes to CTR.
